Art Background
Economics, government, politics, education, relationships, religion, race, general observations, and internal struggles all fuel my works. Coming from an extensive figurative background, the exclusive use of the figure as a subject became insufficient as a means of expression. Through much experimentation, I have found that the layering of text and using a broad variety of materials are the most appropriate solutions to effectively illustrate my anger and frustrations regarding the barrages of absurdities and contradictions within and around me. Manipulating imagery, text, and texture is more of a purging process that results in an artwork.
Artists that influence my work are Michelangelo, Egon Schiele, Emory Douglas, Robert Rauschenburg, Gustav Klimt, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Jasper Johns. Contemporary influences include street artists like Banksy, Poster Boy, and many forms of graffiti. Comics, cartoons, and movies were the earliest influences and continue to inspire me as well.
